Can you recognize bone fractures?
A bone fracture can be: Open or closed.
Open – the skin at the fracture site is damaged, an open wound appears, with bone ends protruding from it.
Closed – the skin at the fracture site is not damaged.
Signs of bone fractures:
- Swelling and bruising at the fracture site
- Pain
- A crackling sensation or sound felt or heard
- Change in shape: the limb may be shortened, unusually bent, twisted, or deformed
- Movement impairment
- Loss of weight-bearing function
- Visible bone fragments.
FIRST AID
When there is an open bone fracture
- Stop the bleeding
- Do not press on protruding bone fragments
- Bandage the injured area as you would a wound with an embedded foreign object
- Immobilize the injured limb so that the joints above and below the injury do not move.
When there is a closed fracture
- Keep the injured area stable and avoid movement
- Immobilize the injured limb so that the joints above and below the injured area do not move (if there is no need to transport the injured person, support the injured limb to prevent movement until emergency services arrive)
- Use firm and hard splints (cardboard, boards, tree branches, etc.) and soft padding to prevent pressure sores
- Attach the splint to the injured limb with a bandage or scarf
- Do not place the splint directly on the wound
- Secure the injured limb to the adjacent limb or body part.
