How to recognize?
Thermal burn:
A burn caused by contact with fire or heated objects, dry heat, friction, hot liquids or steam.
Chemical burn:
A burn caused by corrosive substances (acids, alkalis).
Most often we know nothing or very little information and cannot imagine how to act when burns are caused by electric current or radiation.
Burns that can be caused by electric current, radiation
Symptoms:
- Pain
- Redness of the skin, surrounding tissues swollen (superficial burn)
- Blisters (medium depth burn)
- Charred, grayish, dead skin (deep burn)
- Shock
- Electric burns are characterized by brown, copper-colored deposits on the skin, burn signs at the entry and exit points of the electric current.
FIRST AID
- Ensure your own safety
- Call the general emergency number 112
- Stop the burning process if it is still ongoing. For example, if the victim’s clothes are on fire, extinguish the flames. If the burn is chemical, try to remove all chemical substances from the skin by carefully rinsing with running water.
- Cool the burned area with room temperature (about 8-20 °C) water using a gentle stream.
- Remove all burned clothes and take off bracelets, rings, and other accessories.
- Place the victim in a comfortable body position.
Important!
Cool the burn area with running water, but avoid very cold water and do not cool for too long to prevent hypothermia. Do not tear off clothes, objects, or damaged skin stuck to the burn area.
Do not puncture blisters caused by the burn. Do not apply any ointments, lotions, or oils to the burned areas.
Do not place dressings on the face, as the victim’s face must be visible to assess airway condition and breathing.
Call an ambulance. While waiting for medical personnel, monitor vital signs – consciousness, breathing, and circulation. If the person loses consciousness, open the airway and check breathing. If they are not breathing, begin resuscitation.
Do you lack resuscitation skills or do not trust your current skills? We recommend taking a First Aid course to gain practice and feel confident providing First Aid to the injured.
