How to use a defibrillator?

Knowing how to use a defibrillator is very important because it can save a life if someone experiences cardiac arrest. Here are the main steps on how to use an automated external defibrillator (AED):

1. Ensure the environment is safe

Before starting to use the defibrillator, it is important to make sure the environment is safe for both you and the victim. For example, if the victim is in a body of water or a wet environment, they should be moved to a dry place.

2. Check consciousness and breathing

Approach the person and try to find out if they are conscious. If they do not respond, check their breathing. If the person is not breathing or is breathing very abnormally, begin resuscitation efforts.

3. Call for help

Call emergency medical services at 112 as soon as possible. If there are other people nearby, ask someone else to do this while you begin the actions.

4. Prepare to use the defibrillator

  • Turn on the AED device by pressing the power button.
  • The AED will provide clear audio or visual instructions that should be followed.

5. Apply the electrodes

  • Remove clothing from the chest area (if necessary, you can use the knife included in the AED kit).
  • Attach the electrodes to the bare chest:
    • One electrode should be placed above the right side of the chest, just below the collarbone.
    • The other electrode should be placed on the left side, under the breast, slightly to the side.

6. Deliver the shock

  • Once the electrodes are attached, the defibrillator will automatically analyze the heart rhythm.
  • The AED will tell you if a shock is needed. If a shock is necessary, make sure no one is touching the victim's body, then press the button to deliver the shock.
  • After the shock, the AED will provide instructions on whether to continue manual resuscitation (chest compressions and rescue breaths) until medical personnel arrive or the person shows signs of life.

7. Continue resuscitation efforts

  • If the AED does not advise a shock or if resuscitation should continue after a shock, start or resume chest compressions and artificial respiration (if you can).
  • When performing chest compressions, place your hands in the middle of the sternum and press the chest about 5–6 cm deep at a rate of 100–120 compressions per minute.

8. Wait for medical personnel

Continue resuscitation and follow the AED instructions until emergency medical services arrive or the person recovers.

Using a defibrillator requires quick response and proper actions, so it is important to know the basic steps. If possible, it is recommended to take First Aid courses to gain more practical experience.
