What to do if bitten by a snake?

With increasing reports of snake bites ๐Ÿ, we want to share important information on how to properly respond in such a situation. The first and most important step โ€“ stay calm!

In Lithuania, two species of snakes are found, and only one venomous snake โ€“ the viper. It is very important to recognize which reptile has bitten you โ€“ this will help take appropriate actions and provide first aid.

๐Ÿ Signs of a viper bite:

  • Two puncture marks (tooth bite marks) โ€“ usually on the leg or arm
  • Sudden, sharp pain at the bite site
  • Swelling, redness, sometimes โ€“ bluish discoloration around the wound
  • Warmth or burning sensation around the bite
  • Dizziness, weakness
  • Nausea, vomiting
  • Increased heart rate
  • Bleeding disorders (if the reaction is stronger)
  • In rarer cases โ€“ shortness of breath, loss of consciousness.

Signs of a grass snake bite:

  • Many small tooth marks โ€“ superficial cuts (without deep tooth holes)
  • Mild pain or just discomfort at the bite site
  • The bite site may become slightly red or swollen
  • No chance of poisoning โ€“ no fever, no dizziness, no nausea.

First, what NOT to do if bitten by a snake:

There are many myths about how to act after a snake bite, but please note that under no circumstances should you:

  • Suck the venom out of the wound
  • Tighten the injured limb
  • Cut or burn the wound
  • Try to squeeze out the venom
  • Use "folk" remedies or waste time with home medicine.

Now about FIRST AID after a snake bite:

  • The most important thing is to calm down and calm the victim
  • Call an ambulance or go to the emergency department yourself
  • Remove accessories from the bitten limb
  • Allow the wound to bleed for up to 30 seconds
  • If possible, wash and cool the bite site
  • Keep the injured limb below heart level, try not to move it
  • Drink plenty of fluids
  • If an allergic reaction occurs, take antihistamines; if there is severe pain โ€“ analgesics. Inform medical personnel about any medications taken.

The forest is not our home, so letโ€™s be cautious guests. Before sitting on a stump or moss, first inspect the area. Even if you find the most beautiful boletus mushroom or the tastiest berry โ€“ do not lose vigilance, always watch your surroundings. If you notice reptiles โ€“ calmly and safely move away. Donโ€™t forget proper footwear โ€“ tall boots are best.

Be careful to stay healthy!
